Not all social proof carries the same weight. Specific beats generic: a review naming the job, the area, and the outcome is far more persuasive than five stars and the word Great. Recency matters too, because a wall of testimonials that all date from several years ago raises the question of what happened since. Third-party reviews on platforms the visitor already trusts usually outperform quotes you have selected yourself.
Placement is often the difference between proof that works and proof nobody sees. A dedicated testimonials page is read by almost no one. The same testimonials placed next to the relevant service description, or immediately beside the point where a visitor is deciding whether to enquire, do considerably more work because they answer doubt at the moment it occurs.
Social proof mostly answers the question of whether you are trustworthy. It rarely answers whether you are right for this particular job, which is the other half of the hesitation. A Clerkzo chat widget covers that half: the visitor can ask about their specific situation and get an answer drawn from your own content, with a human handoff available when the question needs a person. Reassurance plus a straight answer converts better than either on its own.
