GEO is less a new discipline than classic SEO pointed at a new surface. The systems generating AI answers still rely on crawling, indexing and quality signals, so the fundamentals carry over: be crawlable, be accurate, be clearly organised. What changes is the unit of value. In traditional search you compete for a click on a link. In an AI answer you compete to be the passage a model pulls into its response, which means individual paragraphs have to stand on their own.
In practice that means answering the question in the first sentence rather than building up to it, using headings that are phrased as real questions, keeping entities explicit instead of leaning on pronouns, and putting comparisons into tables or lists that survive being extracted from their surroundings. Original information helps disproportionately, because a model synthesising an answer has little reason to quote the fifth restatement of something it already has. First-hand detail, your own process, your own numbers where you genuinely have them, gives it a reason.
For a small business, the most practical GEO move is making sure your site actually answers the questions customers ask, in plain language, on pages a crawler can read. That work pays twice. It improves how AI systems represent you, and it improves the answers your own site can give: Clerkzo trains its AI chat widget by crawling your site, so the clearer your pages are, the better your widget answers visitors who arrive with the same questions.
