Speed is really a patience problem. Someone arriving from a search result has no loyalty to your page and a back button within easy reach, so a slow start is often the whole story of why a visit ended. The effect is strongest on phones and on mobile networks, which is where most casual browsing now happens.
The usual culprits are unglamorous. Enormous uncompressed images, a stack of marketing scripts nobody audits, a bloated theme, and hosting that is cheap for reasons. Fixing images and removing scripts you no longer use will typically do more for a small business site than any amount of clever optimisation.
This is also why it is worth asking what any new tool costs you in speed. Clerkzo loads after your content and does not block rendering, so the page a visitor came for is not held up by the widget. And a page that answers questions on the spot keeps people around, which is the outcome speed work is chasing in the first place.
